About the event
Therapeutic mindful breathing is arguably the most comprehensive approach we have to reducing stress and building physical & psychological resiliency. To appreciate the role of this mind/body strategy as a tool in stress reduction, chronic illness, prevention and recovery as well as performance and productivity, it’s important to understand the relationship between the relaxation response and the function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which controls the function of the many of the systems and organs being negatively affected by stress AND the drivers of chronic illness.
Chronic stress and burnout negatively affect the parts of the brain responsible for self-regulation and the on/off switch from sympathetic (SNS) to parasympathetic (PNS) affecting our ability to be physically and psychologically “resilient”. In order to retrain the body/mind, we have to direct attention to balancing the ANS. Specifically, more tools and strategies initiating the PNS.
In Breath As Medicine, we will:
• Understand how breathing rates and patterns influence our nervous system(s)
• Explore the powerful effects of yoga breathing as a mind/body tool and strategy for improving breathing rates, heart rates, heart rate variability and vagal tone
• Learn 3 breathing techniques to reduce stress and self-regulate thoughts & emotions
In just the last few years, research has documented the efficacy of yoga breathing for such conditions as heart disease, cancer, sleep disorders, upper respiratory disease, brain function, hormone regulation, strengthening immune function, back pain, multiple sclerosis, mood disorders and yes, stress reduction.
