Why Breath Works for Stress
Stress is not just a mental experience — it is a full-body physiological response. When you are stressed, your sympathetic nervous system activates, flooding your body with cortisol and adrenaline. Your breath becomes shallow, your heart rate rises, and your thinking narrows.
The breath is the only autonomic function you can consciously control. By deliberately slowing and deepening your breath, you send a direct signal to your brain that you are safe. This activates the vagus nerve, shifts your nervous system into parasympathetic mode, and begins to dissolve the stress response — not by thinking your way out of it, but by breathing your way through it.
